SPECIALIST TEACHING

SPECIALIST TEACHING

Unlike conventional tuition, I have expertise in teaching the specific skills students with literacy and maths difficulties need to progress, and my work is underpinned by up-to-date research.

My talent is in creating a special rapport with my students.  I build a relaxed, positive atmosphere which builds confidence and enables students to reach their full potential. I understand that every learner is different and that a 'one size fits all' approach doesn't work.  If a learner doesn't understand something, then it is up to me to teach it differently.

Teaching sessions will begin with a range of informal/diagnostic assessments.  The results of these are used to devise a multi-sensory, cumulative and engaging programme that plays to a student’s strengths for learning, thus helping to compensate for the areas that they struggle with.  They are also used to assess progress over time.

SPECIALIST TEACHING

Where possible, and only with your consent, I work in partnership with your child's school.  This would include updating your child's teacher with the areas we have been working on every half term and sharing resources and strategies that are working well.

I offer one-to-one specialist tuition in:

+ Maths from primary age up to GCSE.

+ Literacy from primary age up to Key Stage 3.

+ Study skills such as assistive technology, skimming, scanning, organisation and editing.

Due to the co-occurrence of dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties, I am experienced at working with a wide range of additional needs including autism spectrum conditions, dyspraxia and ADHD.

A diagnosis is not necessary, as the strategies I use will be effective with any student.

In the case of younger children, intervention at a young age is recommended.

Lessons take place during school day or after school. This can be either at the student's school, at our base in Pinner or via Zoom.

Lessons are generally one hour in length, although this might be split into two sessions during the week.

Some children benefit from several lessons per week, whilst others find enough support from one weekly lesson.

The first few sessions are used to informally assess the student so that a bespoke, structured, cumulative and multi-sensory intervention programme can be planned.

In creating this personalised programme, I also liaise with parents, teachers and other professionals (where necessary) and read any formal reports that may have been previously carried out.

Lessons are planned and reviewed on a half-termly basis.  Students of all ages are encouraged to take an active role in deciding if they have achieved their goals and what they need to learn next.

Lessons will incorporate a range of activities, including IT and age-appropriate games, to provide over-learning.

Underpinning cognitive weaknesses will be identified and strategies for improvement will be taught.  This might include memory strategies, for example.

Metacognition is an essential part of the programme and this helps learners to develop their own strategies and approaches which can help them away from the tuition sessions.

Homework is recommended as it helps students to retain what they have learnt in the lesson, but it is optional.
